I logged out and logged in just now and it still works.
Yes, the mystery is why it is working now after not working for a few years.

The more rational explanation is that you probably toggled the setting in xfce and that reconfigured something… but I'm ok with everyone believing that bugs fear me.

No, I did not change any xfce setting.
Thanks to all that participated in this discussion, as not only the issue is now fixed, but I learned a few things that could be useful in the future.
