Kernel upgrade 6.18 hangs at "..target Graphical Interface" [resolved]

This morning's (Sunday Jan.4,2026) "yay Syyu" upgrade installed kernel 6.18 then reboots and hangs at "Reached target Graphical Interface".

The post suggests to "ctrl+alt+F2" into a terminal screen. I cannot do this.

The keystroke "ctrl+alt+F2" simply flashes to a terminal screen for perhaps one second then reverts to the boot message screen. Other screens (F3, F4, F5) same result.

If I use "ctrl+alt+del" to reboot the grub screen offers linux-lts, linux-lts (fallback initramfs),  linux, linux (fallback initramfs) kernel choices. Optional kernel choices result in the same hang location.

Also, during the initial boot messaging says something about ...Nvidea driver error... or ...Nvidea driver not find... but, it goes away so fast I cannot quite the entire error statement for posting here. (Sorry.)

I have been using Linux for over two decades but, this problem is way above my level of knowledge.

Help! (To say the least.)

Since you mentioned Nvidia, did you read the news on the front page?

Well, until now, no I had not read the news on the front page! But, now that I have....

I'm running an NVIDIA P1000 and a NVIDIA P620 both Pascal family cards.

I am not sure if I should tough it out here or go ask questions on a NVIDIA forum?

Still leaves me with the problem of how to access a command line prompt?

And Pascal predates Turing (also in the warped nvidia timeline) so you'll need the 580xx drivers

I resorted to resolving my issue by buying a newer video card. Now I'm running a "Turing" card and all boots up and is running as expected.

Now, I only have to concern myself with when Nvidia ages out the Turing series, forcing us to spend our hard earned monies. (I personally, really dislike (actually hate it) when some preparatory company decides your going to spend your money whether you want to or not.)

Now, yes, I could have found an open source work around but, I happened to have been planning to upgrade my video card in the near future. I just pushed my timeline up.

You only would have had to move to the 580xx driver?
